Here in the park, where we are renting a house until the
move, it snowed large, wet snow flakes all day yesterday and into the night. It
is a beautiful sight to see with the trees lined with clumps of sticky snow
early in the morning, but the intense Colorado sun is bringing the thaw. Springtime
in the Rockies is dangerously unpredictable, but also beautiful.
We’re being treated to a different kind of snow storm as tiny
flakes caught in the wind spray, sun-glinted, across the yard. Clouds of steam
are rising up from the tree branches as the snow crystals evaporate before they can become liquid. The temperature is expected to reach into the 70s this weekend, but it’s
a false start to spring. Colorado has several more freezes and snows in store
for us before mid-May when it will finally be safe to plant the summer garden.
Nonetheless, today is lovely. If the trails weren’t
guaranteed to be snow bogged on top and mud laden below, it would be
unfortunate that this is a packing day. The drapes are down, the knickknacks
are in a pile on the table, our family photos are stacked in a corner. Now
begins the miserable month before the move when everything is everywhere and
nothing can be found anywhere. I was sure I saw my sanity in this box
yesterday.
Disassembling my life is hardly the fun part of this
adventure, but all I have to do to escape the disarray is look out on the
snow covered foothills under that bright blue sky. It’s always exciting to move
on to something new, but right now in this particular moment is pretty good too.
